Program Overview

Dive into a hands-on STEM internship in Peru’s majestic Sacred Valley, where you’ll lead water conservation projects in rural communities affected by drought. Learn from experts in the field to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and triumphs of modern-day Quechua communities and explore innovative and traditional methods of creating sustainable water systems. Engage with highland communities, learn about artisanal and agricultural practices and witness the ancient techniques that have sustained generations.

Our journey continues with a visit to the Tipon archaeological site, followed by a 2-day adventure experiencing a Quechua homestay and culminating in exciting activities like rafting and kayaking through mountain rivers.

On GLA’s Peru Internship: Career Exploration in STEM with Focus on Engineering & Sustainable Development you will:

Sample Itinerary

Let’s take a sneak peek at what your program experience might look like this summer! Please note that the order of activities may differ for each program session. The details provided here represent a general outline of what you can anticipate, though community service projects and activities are subject to change based on the needs of our local community partners, cultural celebrations and traditions, weather conditions and the specific requirements of the student group.

Day 1: Arrival

Arrive in Cuzco (CUZ), where our team will greet you and take you to the Sacred Valley, home to our base. Meet your fellow travelers and settle in, followed by a safety orientation and introductions.

Day 2: Orientation, Cuzco Exploration & Intro to Water Source Access

On our first full day in Peru, start with an orientation to review goals, learning objectives, and internship expectations, followed by icebreakers in Mentor groups. In the afternoon, explore Cuzco’s water reservoirs to learn how water management impacts both urban and rural communities. End the day with dinner and a stroll through the historic Plaza de Armas, taking in Cuzco’s Incan and colonial landmarks.

Day 3: Community Tour & Andean Ceremony

Today, travel to our Sacred Valley Home Base and visit nearby ruins for an introduction to Inca civilization. In the evening, join a traditional Andean ceremony honoring Mother Earth and setting intentions for your time in Peru.

Day 4: Project Workshop & Community Connection

Start the day with a project workshop to learn about the community initiatives you’ll support, their goals, and impact. Meet local community members to build relationships, exchange stories, and understand the perspectives guiding the work ahead.

Day 5: Maras Salt Mines, Kayaking & Materials Workshop

Today, visit the Maras Salt Mines to admire Incan engineering, then kayak at Piuray Lagoon, Cuzco’s water source. In the afternoon, join a workshop on sustainable construction, learning how local materials like adobe, stone, and salt are used in community water and sanitation projects.

Days 6-9: Service Project, Textiles & Skills Development

Over four days, work with an Andean community and an engineer to improve sustainable water access for agriculture, learning key engineering principles along the way. Explore neighboring communities to discover traditional backstrap weaving, and in the afternoons, engage in internship curriculum and talks from water conservation and engineering professionals.

Days 10-11: Quechua Homestay & Whitewater Rafting

Embark on an unforgettable journey to the Southern Valley of Cuzco! Visit a nearby Quechua community to cook, share stories, and experience authentic Andean life with an overnight stay in adobe homes. The next day, enjoy thrilling Class II and III whitewater rafting before returning to base to relax and prepare for project presentations.

Days 12-13: Service Project, Group Activities & Peruvian Dance

Work with community members and engineers on local agriculture and resource projects. Evenings include cultural activities like Peruvian dance, plus internship projects, curriculum work, and a guest speaker sharing insights on community, conservation, and sustainable development.

Days 14-15: Hands-on Workshops, Guest Speakers & Team Building Activities

Over the next two days, we’ll engage in hands-on workshops and collaborative exercises on engineering, sustainable development, and community impact, with insights from local leaders. Afternoons feature team-building, reflection, and preparations for our Machu Picchu visit, including its history, culture, and architecture. Finally, we’ll review logistics and get ready for the next adventure.

Days 16-17: Lares Trek

¡Vámonos! We’ll start the Lares Trek from Lares, hiking through farming communities and alpine meadows to our first campsite under the stars. The next day, we’ll reach the pass’s highest point, descend into the Sacred Valley, and take a train to Aguas Calientes to rest before visiting Machu Picchu.

Day 18: Machu Picchu

Today is the day! We’ll take a bus to the ruins to explore the Lost City of the Incas. Our guide will be on hand to tell you more about the fascinating history of this UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site. In the afternoon, we’ll eat lunch and visit the local artisanal market before taking the train back to Ollantaytambo and returning to our Home Base.

Day 19: Cooking Class & San Pedro Market in Cuzco

Today, we travel to Cuzco, pack, and reflect on our journey. Enjoy a hands-on Peruvian cooking class with fresh local ingredients, then explore San Pedro Market to taste local fruits and snacks.

Day 20: Project Presentations & Farewell Dinner

Today, we’ll present our final projects to our nonprofit partner, showcasing everything we’ve learned over the past three weeks. The top proposals will be shared with the community for consideration on equitable and sustainable water distribution. In the afternoon, we’ll participate in a final leadership activity before our farewell dinner with local partners and hosts.

Day 21: Departures

Before we know it, our Peruvian adventure has come to an end. Head to the airport today with memories that will last a lifetime! Staff will assist students with their check-in and accompany them until they have safely departed for their gates. ¡Buen Viaje!

Make a meaningful impact in a region facing urgent environmental and social challenges. Connect with Quechua communities working to adapt to changing conditions, and take part in hands-on projects focused on sustainability and resource management. Learn from experienced engineers and professionals as they share how they apply their skills to solve real-world problems, and collaborate with community members to explore innovative solutions. This immersive experience lets you put leadership and STEM skills into action while building cross-cultural understanding and contributing to positive, lasting change.

Hands-on Learning

Experience the vibrant culture of Quechua communities, where ancestral traditions shape daily life. Alongside fellow student interns, learn time-honored artisanal and agricultural practices through immersive day visits and a welcoming homestay. Marvel at the architecture in Maras and Cuzco as well as the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu. Explore the Incas’ ingenious engineering and learn how their celestial navigation techniques guided innovations in farming and design. Hear from local leaders who share insights into the challenges and achievements of modern Quechua communities.

High school internships like this are rare but increasingly valuable for teens aiming to stand out in competitive university applicant pools. This internship also helps you explore whether a STEM focus is the right fit for your future studies or career path.

Adventure

You may be in Peru to sharpen your STEM skills, but no trip would be complete without some unforgettable adventure. Raft through a scenic river valley, spend two days exploring Cuzco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visit historical and archeological sites of the Inca Empire. Camp in the mountains during a two-day trek to Machu Picchu, a world wonder you won’t want to miss, and discover how engineering and architecture shaped this remarkable 15th-century citadel.

Lodging & Meals

Stay in an exclusive hotel block in the Sacred Valley, outside the city of Cuzco. Students stay in gender-segregated rooms with roommates and have an en-suite bathroom with hot and cold water. There is ample space for group activities, conversation with your new friends and shared meals. During weekend hiking excursions, students will sleep in tents and local lodges provided by GLA.

Home Base staff will prepare authentic Peruvian cuisine for you to try! In Peru, breakfast is simple and typically includes eggs, fresh rolls and jam. Lunch and dinner contain rice, potatoes, fish and many locally-grown fruits, such as cherimoya, lucuma, citrus fruits and pineapple. Pollo a la brasa, also known as Peruvian chicken, is one of the most consumed dishes in the country. Salsas, sauces or dips are essential to Peruvian cuisine and a must on every table!

Introduction

High school students who participate in this GLA travel internship in Peru will develop essential leadership and career development skills, while working on initiatives centered around the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development worldwide.

This is an experiential career development internship with sociological underpinnings into a specific theme and concentration in a field of interest. Interns will gain experience working in-person with a social enterprise or nonprofit host organization from around the world.

Throughout the course of your session you will complete 60 total internship hours:

  • Observation Hours: 36
  • Professional Development Hours: 12
  • Self-Study Hours: 12
  • Service Hours: 36

Learning Objectives

The outcomes of this internship are related to five main learning objectives:

  1. Gain a deeper understanding of your goals and your professional growth areas, as well as a deeper understanding of Peru and STEM fields such as science and engineering.
  2. Attain knowledge and understanding of recent trends, terminology and case studies within the sciences.
  3. Learn to recognize and articulate multiple perspectives within a larger social context.
  4. Learn to critically analyze quantitative and qualitative sources of information to make informed opinions.
  5. Learn to observe and analyze real places and situations where impacts and results can be interpreted and applied within context.

Sustainable Development Goals

The 2030 United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development serves as the framework for discussions and the self-study coursework for our student interns here in Peru. During this travel internship you will focus on three SDGs, including:

Explore topics related to building the case for clean water and sustainable innovation practices.

Curriculum & Merits

Complete a core curriculum with your peers and through the guidance of your internship supervisor. Build your personal competitive edge, as part of a cohort of student interns working in partnership with our global nonprofit partner in Peru. Create a portfolio from completed project work to enhance your college application or future career resume.
