GLA's Global Day of Service

You’re invited to GLA’s Global Day of Service!

On April 4, 2020, we will be hosting our first ever Global Day of Service in GLA’s hometown of San Diego, California. You are invited to join us in person for this two-part event.

EVENT Itinerary — Saturday, April 4, 2020
Beach Cleanup

🕘 8:30 AM – 11 AM
📍 Mission Beach

The day kicks off with our Capstone Community Service Project. In partnership with the local nonprofit, I Love a Clean San Diego, GLA has adopted a local beach as part of our commitment to environmental and marine conservation.

With the goal of keeping our coasts pristine, we’ll break into small groups to walk the beach, ridding the area of trash, micro-plastics, and other debris that threaten our oceans and its inhabitants. This will be our third beach cleanup of the year. See footage from our first beach cleanup here.

Capstone Ceremony

🕘 12 PM – 2:30 PM
📍 Liberty Station

After our beach cleanup, we’ll make our way to Liberty Station — an awesome outdoor event venue just a few minutes from the beach — for an incredible Capstone Ceremony. No need to change clothes after the beach cleanup; this event is casual. We’ll have refreshments, live music, games, and a raffle to win some fun swag!

There will also be an area where guests can participate in a beehive building activity to support a local nonprofit, Via International, which aims to provide an economically beneficial source of income to families across the US/Mexico border. This is definitely a fun activity 🐝— check out pics from our first beehive build here!

To top off this incredible day, hear from keynote speaker and GLA Founder Fred Swaniker, recently named to the Time 100 list of the Most Influential People of 2019.

This event is free and open to the public, but we do ask that you RSVP to confirm your attendance.

We hope you’ll join us to serve the community, mingle with GLA staff and alumni, and learn more about other organizations like GLA to continue your journey either in high school or beyond!

Can’t make it to the Global Day of Service event in San Diego? You can still join us in an act of solidarity by contributing community service hours from anywhere in the world.

You can pledge to complete a community service project as your way of participating. Submit your pledge by March 1 using our online form. Any service project counts toward your pledged hours. You’re encouraged to invite your friends and family to participate, too!

At the Closing Ceremony on April 4th, we’ll tally all of the community service hours completed and honor all participants, near and far, for their commitment to giving back.

Our Gamechanger of the Year will also be honored at the event, flown out to San Diego at no expense and awarded a monetary scholarship. Anyone who pledges community service hours during the eligibility window will be nominated for this honor and potentially be chosen as the recipient.

*All students who complete community service hours for the Global Day of Service either in San Diego or through their own pledged projects will receive a certificate documenting their hours.
