Sample Itinerary
Let’s take a sneak peek at what your program experience might look like this summer! Please note that the order of activities may differ for each program session. The details provided here represent a general outline of what you can anticipate, though community service projects and activities are subject to change based on the needs of our local community partners, cultural celebrations and traditions, weather conditions and the specific requirements of the student group.
Day 1: Arrival
Arrive in San José (SJO), where GLA staff will greet you. Meet your fellow travelers and head to Home Base in Heredia. Unpack, settle in, and enjoy the city views from your mountain home as you prepare for the program ahead.
Day 2: Travel & Orientation
Start the day with a traditional breakfast before embarking on the six-hour journey to Parismina, a peaceful and remote Caribbean community accessible only by boat or plane. We’ll complete the final stretch by boat. Upon arrival, meet the local staff, settle into Home Base, and begin your orientation.
Days 3–5: Sea Turtle Conservation & Cultural Connection
Explore the Caribbean coast through wildlife spotting, a nighttime sea turtle patrol, a river canal boat ride, beach cleanups and time in the water. Visit the nearby village of Parismina for a community tour, cooking and dance activities, sports with local kids and insights from conservation experts working to protect nesting turtles.
Days 6–7: Pacuare River Rafting Adventure
Embark on a two-day rafting trip down the Pacuare River, tackling Class II–IV rapids, hiking rainforest trails and spending the night at a canyon lodge surrounded by waterfalls and wildlife. After this unforgettable adventure, travel to your next Home Base in Heredia to begin the next phase of Spanish classes and community service.
Day 8: City Tour & Spanish Classes
Settle into our language institute in Heredia and take a guided tour of the town center to experience local culture firsthand. Back at the institute, complete a placement test, begin your first interactive Spanish class, and end the day with a group reflection on service and cultural connection.
Days 9–11: Service & Spanish Lessons
Spend your mornings supporting community-led projects at a local school—helping with tasks like painting, planting, and improving classroom spaces—before heading to the language institute for engaging, small-group Spanish lessons. Through games, conversations, and cultural activities like cooking and dance, you’ll build real-world Spanish skills and connect more deeply with the community.
Day 12: Coffee Farm Tour & Spanish Lessons
Begin the day with a tour of a local coffee farm to learn about Costa Rica’s bean-to-cup tradition, then return to the institute for your final Spanish class, reflection and celebration of your progress.
Day 13: La Paz Waterfall
Visit La Paz Waterfall to enjoy lush rainforest scenery, cascading falls, and the wildlife rescue center, then wrap up the day with leadership reflections in your Mentor groups.
Day 14: Zipline & Nature Walk
Soar through the treetops on a zipline and aerial tram, then explore an orchid garden and learn about local wildlife on a guided nature walk. In the evening, pack up and prepare for the next destination.
Day 15: Travel Day
Head north to your second Home Base near the rural community of San Carlos, meet our longtime local partner and settle into this peaceful lakefront setting. Spend the afternoon relaxing or paddleboarding before preparing for your final stretch of service and Spanish practice at local schools.
Days 16–18: Service, Spanish Practice & Leadership Development
Continue your service and Spanish practice at local schools each morning, supporting community projects while using your language skills in real situations. In the afternoons, take part in leadership activities and visit an organic pineapple plantation to learn about sustainable agriculture and its impact on the local community.
Day 19: Arenal Volcano & Hot Springs
Start the morning with hands-on cultural activities, from pressing sugar cane to preparing fresh, local ingredients for lunch. Then explore La Fortuna and end the day unwinding in Arenal’s natural hot springs, enjoying warm volcanic pools and a fun, relaxing evening.
Day 20: Back To San Jose & Closing Reflections
Return to our Home Base near the airport for a final dinner and group reflection, celebrating your Spanish progress, new friendships, and the experiences that shaped your GLA journey.
Day 21: Departures
After breakfast and final goodbyes, we’ll head to the airport where GLA staff will assist with check-in for your journey home. You’ll leave with improved Spanish skills and unforgettable experiences to share with family and friends. With the warmth of Pura Vida in your heart, we hope your farewell is not a goodbye, but a “hasta luego” — until we meet again.

ULTIMATE SPANISH SERVICE & EDUCATION ADVENTURE
Community Service
Work alongside your peers on meaningful, community-led service projects that support local schools. From helping to renovate classrooms and improve facilities to participating in language and cultural exchanges with students, you’ll play an active role in strengthening education and connection. Local students may not always be present due to school holidays, but when they are, you’ll have the chance to interact, practice Spanish and share experiences across cultures. Together, we’ll contribute to projects in rural schools that we partner with each year that benefit from extra support, leaving behind a lasting impact.

Hands-on Learning
Learning comes alive in Costa Rica through hands-on experiences. Strengthen your Spanish skills while connecting with the community and explore local culture through dance, cooking and city tours. Go beyond the classroom with unique opportunities like a boat ride to spot wildlife and explore ecosystems, a talk on sea turtle conservation in the Caribbean and a pineapple plantation tour to learn about ethical farming.
Each experience deepens your understanding of language, culture and global issues.

Adventure
Your journey begins in the Central Valley before heading to the Caribbean, where even arriving at Home Base is an adventure—travel by boat to your jungle ecolodge, spotting wildlife along the way. Tackle class II–IV rapids on a thrilling overnight whitewater rafting trip down the Pacuare River. Zipline through the cloud forest canopy, hike to a hidden waterfall and tour a coffee plantation. Explore the city of Heredia, rich with historic architecture and national monuments and wrap up in La Fortuna with a full day of cultural activities, breathtaking views of Arenal Volcano and a relaxing soak in the hot springs.

Lodging & Meals
GLA operates multiple home bases for this program. Each one is a small hotel or eco-lodge with modest and typical amenities. A first and final hotel near the airport will be used for arrival and departures.
Home Base 1: Home Base is a rustic ecolodge nestled in the jungle outside of Parismina, and is just a short walk to the Caribbean Sea. Students stay in gender-segregated rooms. Enjoy delicious, home-cooked Costa Rican meals and have bathrooms with cold-water showers. Limited access to electricity for only a couple of hours a day, plus the absence of Wi-Fi, allow for an opportunity to disconnect, recenter, and appreciate the local beauty of this remote setting. If you look closely, you might even spot local wildlife in the trees surrounding Home Base!
Note: there is no wifi and limited service at the Parismina Home Base; but students will have access to internet connection about 2-3 times while they are in Parismina.
Home Base 2: Our second Home Base is an exclusive hotel block in a picturesque setting, with small cottages and cabins clustered together amidst beautiful, green mountains in the outskirts of Heredia. There are common areas where students can hang out during downtime or scheduled activities. Enjoy your meals with views of the city and mountains, and take advantage of the pool in designated free time!
Home Base 3: Our third Home Base is located outside the rural town of Santa Teresa located in the province of Alajuela. This Home Base is a private compound with cabins and a guest house. There is a beautiful lake on the property where students can kayak and swim. From here the group will take a day trip to the Arenal Volcano in La Fortuna.
Costa Rica is known for its simple diet of rice, beans and a side of meat. The food at Home Base will reflect the traditional dietary staples of the people in Costa Rica and include many special recipes that reflect the culture of the area. The Central Valley is known for its variety of locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables.
