COSTA RICA

OCEAN & WILDLIFE CONSERVATION ADVENTURE

Become a steward for wildlife and their habitats through sustainability, environmental protection and coastal conservation efforts in the bio-diverse Osa region.

Program Overview

On this program, you will discover Costa Rica’s Osa Province, where you’ll be amazed by the variety of beautiful beaches, mangroves and animal life. Embrace the ocean-minded ‘Pura Vida’ lifestyle as you live on the coast and contribute to ocean and wildlife conservation.

Experience the beauty of the Pacific Ocean and the rich biodiversity of Costa Rica in one of the most unique places on the planet. You’ll volunteer with local ecological groups to help conserve the beaches and wildlife habitats, raise awareness for environmental protection, or prepare food and distribute it to some of the country’s iconic species.

This program combines two themes — Environmental Stewardship and Animal & Wildlife Conservation — making for a one-of-a-kind summer adventure.

On GLA’s Costa Rica: Ocean & Wildlife Conservation Adventure program you will:

  • Volunteer on various environmental restoration and conservation projects to support critical wildlife ecosystems
  • Support the well-being of rescued wildlife through a local organization dedicated to animal welfare and protection
  • Go on an epic boat adventure to Caño Island, snorkel and experience marine life
  • Zipline through the forest canopy

Sample Itinerary

Let’s take a sneak peek at what your program experience might look like this summer! Please note that the order of activities may differ for each program session. The details provided here represent a general outline of what you can anticipate, though community service projects and activities are subject to change based on the needs of our local community partners, cultural celebrations and traditions, weather conditions and the specific requirements of the student group.

Day 1: Arrival

Arrive in San José (SJO), Costa Rica’s capital, where GLA staff will warmly welcome you and take you to our hotel for the first night of the program. During orientation, you’ll meet fellow travelers, GLA staff, and learn what to expect throughout your program. The next morning, we’ll head out early for Uvita.

Day 2: Travel Day to Uvita & Orientation

After our first Costa Rican breakfast, we’ll hop into the vans and begin our journey to the Pacific coast. Along the way, we’ll stop at a famous bridge to see the large population of crocodiles that often gather in the area.

Upon arriving at our Home Base in Uvita, we’ll enjoy lunch before diving into an extensive orientation. We’ll review group objectives, service expectations, and tips for adapting to the local culture. Then, we’ll break into Mentor groups for icebreakers and group activities to get to know each other better.

Days 3-5: Community Service, Adventure, and Cultural Activities

This week, we’ll focus on community service projects like reforestation, beach erosion protection, creating educational signs, supporting local research, and assisting a wildlife rescue center. Service will typically be a half-day activity, with timing depending on the tides.

We’ll also have a surf lesson with certified local instructors from a renowned Uvita surf school, perfect for beginners or those looking to improve. Learn the basics of surfing, equipment, and ocean safety. Additionally, we’ll explore the local culture with a guided walk around the beach community and a cooking class to prepare and taste regional delicacies.

Day 6: Manuel Antonio National Park

In the morning, we’ll visit Manuel Antonio National Park, one of Costa Rica’s top attractions. We’ll hike its trails, explore stunning beaches, and observe the diverse wildlife. Afterward, we’ll return to Uvita for a relaxing afternoon at Home Base, with time to swim in the pool.

Days 7-12: Community Service & Adventure

In our second week, we’ll continue supporting two local organizations, working on our assigned projects while learning about the region’s rich biodiversity and the global threats impacting it. We’ll volunteer at a local wildlife rescue center, assisting with animal care and gaining insight into iconic species.

To deepen our understanding, a guest speaker from a local NGO will discuss rural development and the Plastic-Free Ballena Bay project. We’ll also visit the Innoceanna Marine Center to learn about local conservation issues and their connection to climate change and biodiversity loss.

The week will be filled with adventure, including a hike and swim to Uvita Waterfall, zip-lining through lush forests, and a boat tour to Caño Island for snorkeling with marine life. We’ll end the week with a yoga class to stretch and recenter after an action-packed itinerary.

Day 13: Final Surf Lesson & Drive Back to San José

Our community service days are complete. After finishing our projects, we’ll bid farewell to the local leaders who welcomed us and gave us the opportunity to learn and grow with them.

We’ll spend our last full day in Costa Rica surfing once more, enjoying the ocean waves. After lunch, we’ll head to San José for our final dinner and closing ceremonies to wrap up the program.

Day 14: Departure

¡Adiós y Pura Vida! Our Costa Rica adventure must come to an end. After breakfast and final goodbyes, we’ll head to the airport where GLA staff will check students in for their journey home.

Community Service

Contaminants generated by unsustainable practices worldwide find their way into the sea, threatening the delicate ecosystem of Whale Bay and its wildlife. During this program, your community service projects will depend on the most urgent needs of your host community and its local habitats at the time of your arrival. This might involve participating in reforestation initiatives along the coast, protecting beaches from erosion, creating educational signs and supporting local research initiatives. You may also assist conservationists and marine biologists with their ongoing projects.

Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula is a biodiversity hotspot, home to abundant marine life and a wide variety of species. Our expert partners will guide us through the wonders of this ecosystem and introduce us to their sanctuary, which rescues, researches and rehabilitates iconic native species. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to vital conservation efforts, including reforestation projects, habitat restoration or supporting wildlife care through food preparation and distribution.

Hands-on Learning

Discover how global unsustainable practices impact the delicate ecosystem of Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula and its vibrant wildlife. Our local partners will guide you through this rich ecosystem, offering insights into the cultural and historical ties that influence sustainability in the country. Explore the steps Costa Rica is taking to further protect its natural resources.

As a group, we’ll delve into critical topics in environmental stewardship, including the Marine National Park concept, sustainable marine tourism development, and natural resource preservation, to learn about the protection and conservation of the region’s wildlife.

We’ll also enjoy two surfing lessons from Bodhi Surf School, where we’ll learn about their passion for ocean stewardship, as well as a yoga lesson focused on mindfulness and movement.

Adventure

No visit to Costa Rica is complete without adventure! Discover the thrill of ziplining through the jungle canopy. The course includes nine cables, eleven platforms, two rappelling stations, two suspension bridges and ends with a Tarzan swing. The best part of this tour is that the ecosystem remains completely undisturbed.

Enjoy a brief hike to a nearby waterfall, where you can take a dip to cool off, then embark on an epic adventure by boat to Caño Island. While on the island, explore your surroundings and join a snorkeling excursion among vibrant local marine life. We’ll also journey to Manuel Antonio National Park, considered the crown jewel of Costa Rica. Spot incredible native wildlife, including playful monkeys along the coast. And don’t forget, you’ll be surfing in world-renowned waters along the way!
