COSTA RICA

MARINE CONSERVATION & SEA TURTLE EXPEDITION

The beaches of Costa Rica are yours to explore this summer. Discover what you can do for the future of the planet as you learn about sea turtle conservation and ocean stewardship.

Program Overview

Experience a variety of world-renowned beaches and national parks of Costa Rica. Depending on your session length (14-day or 21-day), two or three small coastal communities will become your home away from home. As you travel the Pacific coastline during your expedition, you will contribute to conservation projects addressing climate change and practice environmental stewardship. On the Nicoya Peninsula, spend a week learning about sea turtle conservation and supporting other wildlife native to the area. Then head south and explore world-famous Manuel Antonio National Park, while continuing your environmental service projects along the coast.

In the third week, for those on the 21-Day Program, your expedition will take you further into the southern Pacific region, where you’ll discover what it takes to become an ocean steward. Throughout this traveling adventure, you will explore the impacts of climate change on our oceans, habitats, and communities, while experiencing nearly every epic Costa Rican adventure you can imagine!

On GLA’s Costa Rica: Marine Conservation & Sea Turtle Expedition program you will:

  • Explore the Pacific coast and enjoy ample beach time
  • Support a sustainable sea turtle hatchery
  • Go boating through bioluminescence
  • Zipline through the forest on an adventure excursion
  • Live in multiple beach communities along the Pacific

Sample Itinerary

Let’s take a sneak peek at what your program experience might look like this summer! Please note that the order of activities may differ for each program session. The details provided here represent a general outline of what you can anticipate, though community service projects and activities are subject to change based on the needs of our local community partners, cultural celebrations and traditions, weather conditions and the specific requirements of the student group.

Day 1: Arrival

Fly into San José (SJO), where staff will greet you warmly. Meet your fellow travelers and get to know your new travel pod. We’ll stay one night near San José to rest after travel, then depart the next morning for a four-hour journey to our Home Base on the Nicoya Peninsula, just steps from the beach.

Day 2: Orientation & Sea Turtle Conservation

Wake up to the sounds of the ocean and wildlife, then dive into an orientation covering group objectives, service expectations, and cultural tips. After breaking into Mentor groups for icebreakers and activities, we’ll head out for our first day of service at the sea turtle hatchery. We’ll meet the organization leaders and begin our new projects. In the evening, we’ll engage in a leadership activity and learn about conservation efforts in Costa Rica.

Days 3-6: Sea Turtle Conservation Service, First National Park Visit & Bioluminescence Boating

Service time! We’ll meet with organization leaders to learn how we’ll contribute to community projects. Our work will be hands-on, including constructing turtle hatcheries, measuring and marking patrol routes for sea turtle nesting, and planting for reforestation. We’ll also do night patrols to protect turtle eggs and support their habitat. Teams will work together, and we’ll practice communicating in Spanish with our local counterparts. We’ll explore a nature preserve, go kayaking to witness bioluminescence, and reflect in the evenings with your GLA students and Mentors on the impact of our service, leadership journey, and cross-cultural experiences.

Day 7: Beach BBQ Day!

Wake up and get ready—it’s time to prepare for the next leg of your journey! But before we say goodbye to Montezuma, let’s make the most of our final day in this tropical paradise.

Spend the afternoon playing beach games, splashing in the waves, and soaking up the sun, then enjoy a classic beach BBQ as the sun sets. In the evening, gather with your mentor group on the sand to reflect on your time here, share favorite memories, and take in the breathtaking views of the Nicoya Peninsula. It’s the perfect way to relax, recharge, and celebrate before tomorrow’s next adventure!

Day 8: Journey to Our Next Beachside Community

Experience the back roads of Costa Rica as we journey down the Pacific coast, including a ferry ride where you might spot dolphins. We’ll stop for lunch and visit the famous crocodiles of the Tarcoles River. By early evening, we’ll arrive at our next home base, located along the stunning Pacific Ocean.

Days 9-12: Service, Ziplining, and Pura Vida Culture

We’ll return to work with the Parrita community, continuing conservation projects for local organizations. We’ll deepen our understanding of environmental stewardship and explore Costa Rica’s global conservation initiatives. Our service will include infrastructure building, beach cleanups, and other tasks as needed by local leaders.

In addition to half days of service, we’ll go ziplining through the rainforest canopy, hike and swim in Manuel Antonio National Park, and possibly encounter monkeys or sloths. In the afternoons, we’ll try cooking local dishes, play games, learn traditional dances, and enjoy the beach and swimming pool.

Days 13-14: Service Wrap-Up & Farewell 14-Day

Today, we’ll wrap up our service projects in this beach community. For those on the 14-day program, it’s time to say goodbye to new friends and the community that’s become your home away from home. We’ll share a celebratory meal and reflect on our accomplishments and lessons learned.

The 14-day students will head to San José to prepare for last-minute souvenirs and departures the following morning. For those on the 21-day program, we’ll continue our adventure to Drake Bay.

Days 15-18: Conservation and Cultural Adventure in Drake Bay

Next, we’ll head to the stunning Drake Bay, where we’ll partner with a top local environmental foundation for meaningful conservation work. Students will participate in habitat restoration, wildlife monitoring, and beach clean-ups, directly contributing to preserving the region’s rich biodiversity.

A highlight of the trip will be a visit to Caño Island for snorkeling in its vibrant marine ecosystems, along with an exciting surf lesson to embrace the coastal lifestyle. These experiences will deepen your appreciation for environmental stewardship, inspiring reflection on your impact and role as a conservation advocate. By the end of this immersive journey, you’ll leave with a strong connection to the Osa Peninsula’s breathtaking landscapes and cultures.

Days 19-20: Volcano Hike, Final Reflection & Celebration

More adventure ahead! We’ll rise early and head towards the center of the country, near San José, for a hike up the active Poás Volcano. As our 3-week journey wraps up, we’ll take time for final reflections and leadership activities. To celebrate, we’ll share a special dinner together and reflect on our accomplishments and all we’ve learned.

Day 21: Departures

After breakfast and final goodbyes, we’ll head to the airport where GLA staff will check students in for their journey home. ¡Adiós!

Community Service

Lend a hand on a variety of meaningful community service projects to support marine conservation along the Pacific coast. Wildlife and habitat conservation will be the cornerstones of your efforts as you assist local conservationists with sea turtle night patrols, hatchery support and other duties essential to supporting this important year-round work. You’ll live and work in small beachside communities where the ocean plays a huge role in daily life. Threats ranging from critical habitat loss to the climate crisis mean there are many opportunities to serve and learn from your host communities here. Projects will be based on the most pressing needs at the time of your arrival. For example, you may participate in environmental projects such as beach clean-ups, planting native tree saplings or creating signs to promote environmental awareness and sustainability.

Hands-on Learning

This is your opportunity to become a steward of the oceans and an advocate for planetary health. As climate change and other environmental impacts continue to affect once-pristine habitats in vulnerable ecosystems around the globe, biodiversity hotspots such as Costa Rica are especially at risk. With Costa Rica representing around 5% of the world’s biodiversity despite its small size, it is critical that we develop strategies to protect and preserve the environment. Marine conservationists and local experts will guide you through what’s happening on land and in the water. Learn about blue zones, the connection between environmental and community health, and more. And don’t forget that “Tico culture” is another treasure to explore. Experience Costa Rican music and dance, and participate in a cooking class with a local community leader.

Adventure

Adventure is at the heart of this program! Designed for the nature adventure seeker and beach lover, you will arrive and quickly head to our first beachside community in the Guanacaste region, where we will go bioluminescence kayaking at night. Explore a nearby wildlife refuge, and spend time soaking up the sun on beaches made of tiny seashells.

Next, we will travel to another beach community, where you’ll discover world-famous Manuel Antonio National Park. This park has impressive landscapes, diverse wildlife, and several coves with white-sand beaches and lush foliage amidst great mountains and forests. Hike, swim, and get face-to-face with monkeys, birds, and (with a little luck) sloths. Go ziplining and experience both a Costa Rican cooking class and dance class.

On the 21-Day Program only, we will then head even further south for the final week. Explore your third beach community as you try surfing, hike the jungles of Costa Rica, and take an epic boat ride to Caño Island. Keep an eye out for sea turtles and other wildlife! You’ll even have a unique opportunity to hike the active and spectacular Poás Volcano before you head home.

Lodging & Meals

You will have multiple Home Bases on this program, each a unique lodging experience as you travel along Costa Rica’s Pacific shoreline. Each Home Base is an ecolodge or hotel located in coastal communities on the Pacific Coast, and you’ll make several visits to the ocean during your time on-program. The Home Bases themselves are comfortable, with basic amenities and western-style bathrooms. Students will share rooms with roommates, and have shared bathrooms with showers.

Costa Rica is known for its simple diet of rice, beans and a side of meat. The food at Home Base will reflect the traditional dietary staples of the people in Costa Rica. It will be simple, but fresh and healthy and include delicious, locally-grown fruits.
