The beaches of Costa Rica, from the Caribbean to the Pacific, are yours to explore this summer. Discover what you can do for the future of our planet as you learn about sea turtle conservation and ocean stewardship.

Program Overview
Experience Costa Rica’s stunning beaches and protected natural areas as you travel coast to coast. Based on your program length (14 or 21 days), two or three small coastal communities will become your home away from home. As you travel from the Caribbean to the Pacific, you’ll contribute to conservation projects that address climate change and support environmental stewardship.
On the Caribbean side, spend a week in a rural, remote community learning about sea turtle conservation and sustainable living. Then head west to the Nicoya Peninsula, continuing your environmental and wildlife service projects along the Pacific.
During the 21-day program, your third week takes you deeper into the southern Pacific, all the way to the Osa Peninsula, where you’ll discover what it means to be an ocean and environmental steward. Home to 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity, the Osa Peninsula offers an incredible opportunity to learn about this ecological hotspot and its complex ecosystems.
Throughout your journey, you’ll explore the impacts of climate change on oceans, habitats and communities, all while experiencing nearly every epic Costa Rican adventure you can imagine!
On GLA’s Costa Rica: Marine Conservation & Sea Turtle Expedition program you will:
- Explore the Caribbean and Pacific coasts and enjoy ample beach time
- Support a sustainable sea turtle hatchery
- Go boating through bioluminescence
- Zipline through the forest on an adventure excursion
- Live in multiple beach communities and work with organizations protecting sea turtle populations
- Hike around the spectacular Irazú Volcano National Park and explore what’s known as Costa Rica’s magical forest
- Discover the Osa Peninsula, famous for its stunning biodiversity (21-day program only)

MARINE CONSERVATION & SEA TURTLE EXPEDITION
Sample Itinerary
Let’s take a sneak peek at what your program experience might look like this summer! Please note that the order of activities may differ for each program session. The details provided here represent a general outline of what you can anticipate, though community service projects and activities are subject to change based on the needs of our local community partners, cultural celebrations and traditions, weather conditions and the specific requirements of the student group.
Day 1: Welcome To Costa Rica!
Fly into San José (SJO) where staff will be waiting to greet you with open arms. Meet up with your fellow travelers and get acquainted with your new travel cohort. We will stay one night near San José to recover from travel and use the time to get to know other students and staff, as well as our new country and culture for the next two to three weeks.
Day 2: Orientation & Travel To The Caribbean
Wake up to the sounds of the native birds around our Home Base, then get ready for a welcome orientation before departing on our two-hour journey to our remote Home Base on the Caribbean coast, an ecolodge surrounded by an organic farm, built by one of our long-time program partners.
Days 3-5: Service, Night Patrols & Cultural Activities
Spend your days exploring the lush surroundings of Home Base, spotting wildlife like sloths and howler monkeys, enjoying a boat tour through the canals and supporting local conservation through beach cleanups and environmental projects. At night, join turtle patrols to protect nesting turtles and collect eggs for safekeeping at the hatchery. You’ll also visit the nearby town of Parismina to meet locals, enjoy cultural activities and learn about ongoing sea turtle conservation efforts.
Please note: Sea turtle nesting on the beaches of Costa Rica is a natural phenomenon that occurs annually throughout the spring and summer months. While every opportunity is given to maximize the chances for GLA students to witness this phenomenon in person, we unfortunately cannot control or predict the exact time a turtle will emerge to nest or baby turtles will be ready to be released into the ocean and therefore we cannot guarantee that students on any specific session will see a turtle in person. However, the service work students do on this program has a direct and lasting impact on local sea turtle conservation efforts.
Days 6-7: Travel To Cartago
Conclude your final service project in Parismina before traveling to Cartago, where you’ll explore a new ecosystem and spend a day hiking through Irazú Volcano National Park and Costa Rica’s magical forests.
Day 8: Journey to Our Next Beachside Community
Experience the back roads of Costa Rica as we journey down the Pacific coast, including a ferry ride where you might spot dolphins. We’ll stop for lunch and visit the famous crocodiles of the Tarcoles River. By early evening, we’ll arrive at our next home base, located along the stunning Pacific Ocean.
Days 9-12: Sea Turtle Conservation Service, Waterfall Hike, Wildlife Reserve & Bioluminescence Boating
Support local conservation efforts by building hatcheries, patrolling beaches and reforesting turtle habitats while practicing your Spanish with community members. Between service, enjoy adventures like hiking to waterfalls, exploring a wildlife reserve and kayaking through bioluminescent waters, followed by evening reflections with your group.
Days 13–14: Zipline, Surf & Farewell
For 14-day students, cap off your journey with a thrilling zipline adventure before returning to San José for a celebratory farewell dinner and final reflections.
For 21-day students, continue south to Puerto Jiménez, stopping for a surf lesson along the way, and meet your new sea turtle conservation partners while exploring your final destination in the Osa Peninsula.
Days 15–18: Conservation & Culture in the Osa Peninsula
Work with a local sea turtle foundation in one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth, restoring habitats, monitoring wildlife and supporting conservation through hands-on service. Between projects, hear from guest speakers, snorkel around Caño Island’s vibrant reefs and deepen your connection to the people and ecosystems of the Osa Peninsula.
Days 19–20: Zipline, Reflection & Farewell Celebration
Travel back toward San José for your final adventure and closing days together. Soar through the treetops on a thrilling zipline and enjoy a nature walk to spot wildlife and explore local flora. As the program winds down, come together for final reflections and leadership activities before sharing a celebratory dinner to honor all you’ve experienced and achieved on this unforgettable journey.
Day 21: Departures For 21-Day
After breakfast and final goodbyes, head to the airport where GLA staff will check students in for their journey home. ¡Adiós!, or better yet, ¡Hasta luego!

COSTA RICA
MARINE CONSERVATION & SEA TURTLE EXPEDITION
Community Service
Lend a hand on community service projects that support marine conservation along Costa Rica’s Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Wildlife and habitat conservation will be at the heart of your work as you assist local conservationists with sea turtle night patrols, hatchery care and other duties essential to this year-round effort.
You’ll live and work in small beachside communities where the ocean plays a big role in daily life. With threats like habitat loss and the climate crisis, there are many ways to serve and learn from your host communities. Projects are based on the most pressing needs when you arrive. You may help with beach cleanups, plant native tree saplings or create signs that promote environmental awareness and sustainability.

Hands-on Learning
This is your chance to become a steward of the ocean and an advocate for planetary health. As climate change and other environmental threats continue to impact vulnerable ecosystems around the globe, biodiversity hotspots like Costa Rica face increasing risk. Though small in size, Costa Rica holds about 5% of the world’s biodiversity, making conservation efforts here especially critical.
Marine conservationists and local experts will guide you through what’s happening both on land and in the water. Learn about blue zones, the connection between environmental and community health and more. While you’re here, take time to enjoy the richness of Tico culture! Experience Costa Rica music and dance, and have a culinary adventure during your time here.

Adventure
Adventure is at the heart of this program! Designed for the nature adventure seeker and beach lover, you will arrive and quickly head to our first local community, located off the Caribbean coast. You’ll explore an organic farm and take a boat through coastal waterways, and play a game of soccer with local community members. Take part in a community-led Costa Rican cooking class and dance class.
On your way to the next beachside community, you’ll have an overnight stop in the Central Valley, experiencing the cooler temperatures and lush greenery and valleys. Hike around the spectacular Irazú Volcano National Park and explore what is known as the “magical forest” of Costa Rica. From there, you’ll travel to your next stop on the Nicoya Peninsula, where you will go bioluminescence kayaking at night, hike to a waterfall, and spend time soaking up the sun.
On the 21-Day Program only, we will then head even farther south for the final week. Explore your third nature-centric community as you try surfing, exploring a new turtle hatchery, and take an epic boat ride to Caño Island. Keep an eye out for sea turtles and other wildlife! Wrap up your Tico adventure by sailing through the treetops on a zipline and take an aerial tram ride through the forest.

Lodging & Meals
You will have multiple Home Bases on this program, each a unique lodging experience as you travel along Costa Rica’s shorelines. Each Home Base is an ecolodge or hotel located in coastal communities, and you’ll make several visits to the ocean during your time on-program. The Home Bases themselves are comfortable, with basic amenities and western-style bathrooms. Students will share rooms with roommates, and have shared bathrooms with showers.
[Please note: Home Base 1 is a very remote site with limited internet and cell service. Get excited to truly disconnect from technology and connect with your peers and the local environment.]
Costa Rica is known for its simple diet of rice, beans and a side of meat. The food at Home Base will reflect the traditional dietary staples of the people in Costa Rica. It will be simple, but fresh and healthy and include delicious, locally-grown fruits.
