Sample Itinerary

Let’s take a sneak peek at what your program experience might look like this summer! Please note that the order of activities may differ for each program session. The details provided here represent a general outline of what you can anticipate, though community service projects and activities are subject to change based on the needs of our local community partners, cultural celebrations and traditions, weather conditions and the specific requirements of the student group.

Day 1: Arrival

Aloha and welcome to Hawaii! Upon arrival at Maui Airport (OGG), you’ll be greeted by our staff. We’ll then journey along the coast to the Home Base to unpack, relax, and meet your fellow adventurers. Enjoy your first meal together, meet your Mentors and local staff, and watch a stunning Hawaiian sunset as we kick off an exciting adventure ahead!

Day 2: Volcano Hike, Orientation & Guest Speaker

Today, we’ll head to Haleakalā National Park, home to the dormant Haleakalā Crater, which formed 75% of Maui. After learning about the park’s history, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch with views of the crater. Then, hike down into the crater for a unique experience, often hiking through clouds for an otherworldly effect. (Fun fact: More endangered species live here than in any other U.S. National Park!)

In the afternoon, we’ll return to Home Base to review program objectives and community service projects. We’ll meet a local community member to learn about Maui and the communities we’ll support. We’ll discuss community needs, volunteer expectations, and bond through group activities and meals.

Days 3-4: Cultural & Environmental Education & Service

Today, we’ll have a unique opportunity to explore Maui’s culture and the vital relationship between humans and the environment. We’ll partner with a local organization dedicated to preserving Native Hawaiian flora, fauna, and customs. At a cultural reserve, we’ll engage in environmental stewardship through activities like traditional taro farming and invasive species mitigation. We’ll also learn about the Hawaiian ahupuaʻa system and cultural practices like hula dancing and lei-making. Immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture and service today and soak it all in.

Day 5: Sail, Snorkel, & Sea

It’s adventure time! We’ll kick off the day on a catamaran to explore Maui from the water. Take a dip in the vibrant blue ocean to snorkel and discover marine life, possibly encountering sea turtles in their natural habitat. In the afternoon, we’ll visit the Maui Ocean Center, an aquarium offering a captivating look at the underwater world. Marvel at diverse marine life, including coral reefs and sea turtles, while learning about ocean conservation. The interactive exhibits and touch pools will deepen your appreciation for marine life.

Day 6: Cultural & Environmental Education Continue

Today, we’ll explore the magic of Iao Valley with our service partner as our guide! Enjoy a moderate hike, swim in Maui’s cool mountain streams, gather leaves and flowers to make leis, and even get a quick lesson in hula!

Day 7: Cultural Day & Beach Afternoon

Start the morning at one of Maui’s iconic hotels and cultural sites, with a documentary on Hawaiian history followed by a tour of its historical significance, including its ties to an indigenous burial ground. Learn about Hawaiian traditions and the importance of land and culture. In the afternoon, relax on one of Maui’s beautiful beaches, swim, and reflect on the connections you’re making with the environment and its people.

Day 8: Service & Cultural Connections Continue

Continue your meaningful service work with local environmental and cultural organizations. Work alongside passionate community members dedicated to preserving Maui’s natural beauty and heritage. Whether planting native trees, cleaning beaches, or building an indigenous fish pond, your efforts will help protect the island’s ecosystems and cultural legacy.

Day 9: Surf & Luau Night

We’ll start the day with a surf lesson, including a safety briefing and land instruction before hitting the waves. Afterward, we’ll visit a small town for some souvenir shopping. Later, after showering and packing, we’ll celebrate our new friendships and achievements Hawaiian-style! Enjoy a traditional luau with hula dancers, fire dancers, and ukulele music. Feast on local dishes like Kalua pig, poi, and fresh fruits while experiencing the storytelling, music, and dance of the performers.

Day 10: Departure

It’s time to say aloha again (which also means “goodbye!”). Enjoy your last Hawaiian breakfast and head to the airport to begin your journey back. At the airport, GLA staff will help you check in for your flight and see you off on your trip home.

You may even have a chance to harvest the materials to make your own lei!

Finally, finish your amazing time in Hawaii with a traditional Polynesian Luau where you will taste some of the most famous dishes of Hawaii and enjoy an evening of dancing and storytelling.

Adventure

“This experience as a whole was one of the best that I’ve ever had. This trip pushed me outside of my comfort zone multiple times, which helped me discover so many new opportunities that I can enjoy. I would not hesitate to not only take another GLA trip myself but also recommend trips to others.”
