GHANA

CHILDREN OF AFRICA

Beating drums, children's laughter and warm greetings welcome you to become family in the heart of West Africa.

Program Overview

On this program you will step onto the flat, sandy land of Ghana and immediately hear the laughter of children everywhere. This laughter will be the soundtrack to your trip, and a source of energy as you volunteer among one of Africa’s most passionate and kind communities. Ghanaians are known for their smiles, vibrancy and welcoming nature—you’ll see bright colors in the land, stitched into traditional clothing and adorning your Home Base. Your presence will infuse the classroom with excitement as you inspire students toward success in school.

On GLA’s Ghana: Children of Africa™ program you will:

  • Develop educational resources that will be used to tutor children at a local primary school
  • Help build and refurbish school facilities
  • Discuss current social issues facing Ghana’s educational access
  • Learn traditional African dance, batik fabric dyeing and how to play drums and percussion instruments
  • Explore outdoor markets, visit striking and historic sites, experience a scenic waterfall and hike in nature

Sample Itinerary

Let’s take a sneak peek at what your program experience might look like this summer! Please note that the order of activities may differ for each program session. The details provided here represent a general outline of what you can anticipate, though community service projects and activities are subject to change based on the needs of our local community partners, cultural celebrations and traditions, weather conditions and the specific requirements of the student group.

Day 1: Arrival

Fly into Accra, the capital of Ghana, where a GLA staff member will greet you at the airport. We’ll drive to the GLA Home Base, where you’ll meet fellow students and settle into your new home. Spend the rest of the day resting, learning some local Krobo language, exploring the area, and visiting the schools where we’ll be volunteering.

Day 2: Getting Acquainted

We’ll spend an afternoon with a “host family,” immersing ourselves in Ghanaian culture and getting to know members of the local community. We’ll also learn about the history of Ghana and this particular community from a local leader.

Day 3: Service Orientation & Village Tour

Service begins! We’ll start with an orientation to our community service projects, followed by a tour of the local village and a visit to the market. Later, you’ll meet a local seamstress to design your own clothing using traditional fabric purchased at the market—seeing the final result will be part of the fun!

In the afternoon, we’ll head to the park to play with local children and finish the day by preparing lesson plans for our service.

Day 4: Continued Village Tour

We will continue to get to know the town visiting a local church, hearing beautiful music, and ending the day with a spectacular bonfire as our group grows closer together in all of our experiences in Ghana.

Day 5: Host Family Visit

Today will be our first host family visit, getting to know real local families in the community and sharing cultural exchanges. We’ll also get the gift of a Ghanian naming ceremony so that you can continue to immerse in the Krobo culture!

Day 6: Community Service

Each day, we’ll rise early, like the village, and spend our mornings at local primary schools—either teaching in classrooms or working on school refurbishment projects. After a hearty lunch at the Home Base, we’ll set out for afternoon adventures, like visiting colorful markets, helping prepare a local dish, and more! We’ll also spend time at a local park, where you can play with the children in a relaxed setting.

Day 7: Community Service & Drumming Lesson

Today in the afternoon we’ll have the chance to learn about traditional drumming and dancing from a professional troop! Feel the rhythm yourself as you immerse in games and dance with the children you are creating lasting bonds with.

Day 8: Community Service & Batik Cloth Dyeing

Today, we’ll participate in Batik cloth dyeing, a traditional technique in Ghana where wax-resistant dye is applied to fabric to create patterns. This culturally significant art form is used for clothing and decoration. With help from a local artisan, you’ll create your own Batik cloth to keep as a souvenir.

Day 9: Waterfall Hike & Cedi Bead Factory

After several days of service at the schools, we’ll take a break and head out for some adventure! We’ll spend the day hiking to a nearby waterfall, then visit the Cedi Bead Factory, an internationally recognized bead production company. You’ll meet local artisans and learn about the cultural and artistic significance of beadmaking in Ghana. There will also be an opportunity to purchase souvenirs like necklaces, bracelets, and more.

Day 10: Sajuna Beach Resort

A student favorite! Take a full day to go to a local beach resort where you’ll have a chance to unwind by playing volleyball, ping pong, swim, and an optional boat ride.

Day 11: Back to Service

Our final mornings will be spent with the children at the primary schools, working hard to complete as much as possible on our physical projects. In the evening, we’ll spend time with local host families, sharing stories and learning more about their culture.

Day 12: Service & Cooking Class

After a committed morning at the local schools, we will relax and enjoy learning more about the local flavors in a cooking class and dinner!

Day 13: Farewell Dinner

As we say our goodbyes after 14 fast-paced days, take a moment to reflect on how these experiences have changed you. How will you carry them forward? What actions will you take when you return home? We’ll end our journey with a farewell dinner to celebrate all that we’ve accomplished.

Day 14: Departure

Alas, it’s time to exchange goodbyes with your Ghana family! After breakfast, our group will travel back to the airport in Accra, where GLA staff will help you check in for your flight and see you off for your journey home.

Community Service

Are you ready to make a meaningful difference this summer? Volunteer in primary schools to work with local children on improving their English skills. Develop educational resources to tutor students who need extra support. Contribute to each school’s needs by helping with improvements to the facilities. Split your time between teaching at the school and lending a hand with campus refurbishment projects. This way, you and your peers will engage in all aspects of the school and gain valuable insights into education in Ghana. Try to keep up with the children as they invite you to play soccer and schoolyard games after class!

Hands-on Learning

Immerse yourself in batik cloth dyeing, drumming workshops, and a crash course in the native language. You’ll be invited to take part in a traditional Ghanaian naming ceremony, where you’ll learn about the cultural significance of names and their deep connection to identity and heritage. You’ll also have an exceptional opportunity to visit a seamstress for custom-made, traditional Ghanaian clothing made from fabrics you select. Hear from local experts on traditional gender roles and education in Ghana. In the afternoons you will engage local children in the Kid’s Club and truly immerse and form life-long friendships!

Adventure

Traveling to West Africa is an adventure in itself, but that’s only the beginning. Experience Ghana’s rich cultural heritage by learning traditional drumming and dancing from local community members. The energy is unforgettable! Explore outdoor markets and enjoy cooking lessons with the staff at your Home Base, who will share their warmth and hospitality. Take in Ghana’s natural beauty with a nature hike and visit to a beautiful waterfall.

Lodging & Meals

The Home Base for this program is located in Krobo, which is three hours inland. Accommodations are basic, clean and safe. Students sleep in gender-segregated rooms with roommates, and have access to shared bathrooms with cold-water showers.

Ghanaian cuisine has traditional dishes from each ethnic group, tribe and clan, and GLA cooks at Home Base will provide many options for you to sample. Ghanaian staples are mostly vegetarian, including rice, beans, and fresh vegetables. We will also have fresh fish and seafood.

Making a Difference

Son of a Saint, a nonprofit mentorship program based in New Orleans, works with boys that have absent fathers.

Learning Afar and the GLA International Foundation facilitated a trip for these boys through Global Leadership Adventures in November 2022. This service-learning program shares a lot of the program itinerary featured on our Ghana: Children of Africa summer program.

This trip aimed to inspire these teen boys to discover their true leadership potential.

Watch this video to discover their story, and hopefully be inspired to make meaningful change in your world, too!
