Program Overview
Experience Costa Rican culture by interacting with local children in an after-school program. Help students with their homework, ignite their creativity through art and bond through playing sports and games. Have a real impact on the future of the surrounding communities by improving the school facilities – garden, add some color to the classroom walls, and assist with crucial infrastructure projects as needed by the organization. Discover the fervor for soccer and the rise of other professional sports in Costa Rica – stay active with friendly pick-up games of soccer and volleyball.
Beyond the realms of sports and service, you’ll experience all the adventure and wildlife that Costa Rica has to offer. Zipline through the forest canopy, and with a little luck, spot monkeys and macaws. Live the Pura Vida lifestyle as you enjoy the beautiful beaches of Guanacaste and catch some waves in the warm waters of the Pacific.

Community Service
Community service is at the heart of every GLA program! Engage in meaningful community service by volunteering for diverse service projects that contribute to the betterment of the local community where you’ll reside for this 14-day program. Take an active role in organizing and leading activities for local children in an after-school program. This can include sports, art projects, and other creative learning activities to create an enriching and fun environment. Additionally, you’ll provide hands-on assistance with infrastructure projects to enhance schools and community spaces. This immersive cultural experience not only fosters personal growth, but also enables a direct and impactful contribution to this rural area.
Hands-on Learning
Discover the fervor for soccer and the rise of other professional sports in Costa Rica. By staying in a non-touristy community and hearing from local community members and athletes, you’ll have a chance to learn about the “Tico” culture and the role that sports play in it throughout your time here. In addition to traditional sports, you’ll experience the influence surfing has had on coastal communities and contributed to tourism in Costa Rica. Learn to surf in warm friendly waves with the help of expert instructors and connect to the ocean.
Beyond sports culture, learn about how important education is to the country and discover Costa Rica’s renowned connection to – and protection of – the environment.
Adventure
If you’re worrying about not staying active during your time in Costa Rica, fear not!
From playing pick-up soccer and volleyball matches to leading an after-school sports program for local students, sports will be a constant throughout your program. Take on a local team in a higher-stakes soccer scrimmage, then try your hand at surfing at one of Guanacaste’s beautiful beaches, renowned for their surf. You’ll also have a chance to enjoy a day on the water aboard a catamaran, stopping to snorkel and spot tropical marine life. And no visit to Costa Rica is complete without the adrenaline rush of soaring through the jungle canopy on a zipline!
Lodging
Your Home Base on this program is an ecolodge, surrounded by abundant green areas, fruit trees, beautiful flora, monkeys and other wildlife. Students will share cabin-style rooms with roommates and have shared bathrooms with showers. The food, healthy and locally sourced, will include rice, beans, meats, vegetables and fresh fruit.
