COSTA RICA

BEACHSIDE SERVICE ADVENTURE

Discover an unforgettable adventure in Costa Rica and experience what locals call "Pura Vida" — the pure life — while contributing to a meaningful service project in a rural beach community.

Program Overview

Escape to Costa Rica’s beautiful Pacific coast, where you’ll volunteer on a service project based on the community’s current needs. This could involve beach clean-ups for nesting sea turtles, community or ecosystem restoration projects, or other initiatives that support your host community. Although Costa Rica has many notable achievements, such as universal healthcare, many communities – individuals, families, and children alike – still benefit from your support! Community-led service projects can be a big help to citizens in rural areas. Relax after a hard day’s work at our beautiful Home Base. You’ll also enjoy adventure activities like river tubing, ziplining, and a catamaran and snorkeling tour, sharing fun in the sun with the new friends you meet during the program.

On GLA’s Costa Rica: Beachside Service Adventure program you will:

  • Live in and explore a coastal village near a beautiful beach
  • Volunteer on community development or environmental conservation projects
  • Go tubing down the spectacular Rio Negro river and zipline through the forest canopy
  • Engage with grassroots organizations led by local community leaders
  • Enjoy a catamaran excursion and snorkel among wild marine life

Sample Itinerary

Let’s take a sneak peek at what your program experience might look like this summer! Please note that the order of activities may differ for each program session. The details provided here represent a general outline of what you can anticipate, though community service projects and activities are subject to change based on the needs of our local community partners, cultural celebrations and traditions, weather conditions and the specific requirements of the student group.

Day 1: Arrival

Fly into Liberia Guanacaste Airport (LIR) on the first day, where GLA staff will greet you and take you to our Home Base, a beautiful family-owned hotel on the Pacific coast. We’ll kick things off with a brief orientation to meet fellow travelers and GLA staff. After getting settled, enjoy your first delicious Costa Rican dinner and chat with your roommates about what you’re most excited for before a restful night’s sleep.

Day 2: Getting Oriented

We’ll start our time together with team-building activities, using the gardens, pool, sports fields, and sandy beaches around us. You’ll also get acquainted with your community service site, learning about the site leaders and local neighbors to understand the region’s socio-economic, geographic, and environmental conditions. Tonight, we’ll have our first Mentor sessions and a leadership activity.

*Note: While there are multiple service projects, each student will stay with the same site and focus on one project throughout the program. The itinerary below outlines the various service sites and possible projects.

Day 3: Community Service - Infrastructure Project

We’ll jump straight into our service projects, working on renovations at a local school or community center—painting, sanding, mixing cement, and repairing walkways and bridges. Each group will stick with one project, creating safe, vibrant spaces for the community.

After lunch at Home Base, enjoy a cultural workshop on Costa Rican dances like salsa, bachata, and merengue. In the evenings, relax with soccer or yoga on the beach, followed by reflection and leadership sessions around the bonfire with your GLA Mentors.

Day 4: Community Service - Beach Clean-Up

Today, you’ll make an immediate impact on Costa Rica’s environment by removing trash from the beaches before it reaches the land, coastal waters, and mangroves. With 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean, this debris harms seabirds, fish, and marine animals, while polluting a vital resource. Spend a few hours helping protect our oceans, then enjoy the clean beach afterward!

Day 5: Snorkeling & Catamaran Ride

It’s adventure day! After breakfast, we’ll board a catamaran to a stunning snorkeling spot with clear, warm waters year-round. Explore an underwater world of colorful fish and coral, then relax on a pristine white-sand beach. Enjoy fresh fruit and a delicious lunch aboard the boat as we sail back to the harbor. If we’re lucky, we might even spot dolphins or sea turtles along the way!

Day 6: Community Service - Restoring Our Watersheds

After a restful break, we’ll jump back into service with the Nandamojo Association at the Guanacaste Water Center, working on a reforestation project to combat drought. Traditional farming methods like herbicides and burning land for grazing have caused ecological harm, but education on sustainable farming is underway.

You’ll help by replenishing forested areas, tending saplings, planting trees, and maintaining existing reforestation projects on both public and private lands. Planting trees is crucial for creating wildlife corridors, retaining rainwater, and protecting the land from erosion and drought.

Day 7: Community Service - Turtle Conservation

Playa Junquillal’s black sand beach attracts four species of sea turtles, and today you’ll learn how to identify their tracks with the help of a resident marine biologist. Your projects may include replenishing the hatchery sand, relocating eggs for monitoring, collecting biometric data, releasing baby turtles into the ocean (if nature permits), cleaning the beach to create a welcoming environment for nesting turtles, and planting native species. These efforts help protect and boost the local turtle population.

Day 8: Community Service & Cultural Activity

On our final day of community service, we’ll put the finishing touches on our projects. Each group will share their accomplishments, reflecting on the challenges and triumphs. In the afternoon, we’ll have some fun with traditional Costa Rican games and a soccer scrimmage. Then, enjoy a cooking class led by a local community member, where you’ll learn to make traditional Guanacaste dishes in a clay oven. ¡Buen provecho!

Day 9: Ziplining & Tubing Adventure

On the last full day in Costa Rica, we’ll embrace the country’s stunning outdoor adventure! Test your limits as you soar above the treetops on eleven exhilarating zipline cables, experiencing the forest from the canopy.

After a delicious lunch, we’ll head out for even more fun—bouncing and splashing down three miles of rapids in the Rio Negro (weather permitting). Along the way, you’ll also pass quiet pools where you can take in the tropical scenery. Special river tube rafts with handles and protective bottoms, along with a guide to ensure safety, will make for an unforgettable experience!

Day 10: Departure

It’s hard to believe our Costa Rica adventure is coming to an end. Take time to reflect on your personal growth and the life-changing memories during the GLA closing ceremonies. Afterward, we’ll say our goodbyes and see-you-laters before traveling together to the Liberia airport. GLA staff will assist with check-in and bid you farewell as you head home.

Community Service

One of the unique and wonderful aspects of participating in a Global Leadership Adventures program is that all our volunteer efforts are truly community-led service projects. There are many opportunities to serve the community here, meaning you’ll be working on a meaningful project based on what is identified as most needed within the community at the time of your arrival. For example, you may assist with environmental projects like beach cleanups, planting native tree saplings, or creating signs to promote environmental awareness and sustainability. You may also work on initiatives within local schools, such as improving classroom infrastructure or establishing a school or community garden. The best part is that you’ll be living and working in a small beachside community alongside welcoming locals, where the ocean plays a huge role in daily life.

Hands-on Learning

Immerse yourself in Costa Rican culture through hands-on experiences like learning to dance salsa and merengue, cooking traditional dishes, and indulging in fresh, locally grown fruits. You and your fellow travelers will discuss current social issues in Costa Rica, including growing environmental concerns and the importance of ecotourism. You’ll also have opportunities to practice your Spanish! Costa Rica is renowned for its well-preserved biodiversity, and you’ll witness an array of wildlife you won’t find anywhere else on Earth.

Adventure

Costa Rica is an adventurer’s dream! You and your new friends will cruise along the Guanacaste coast on a catamaran and witness stunning natural habitats. Go ziplining through lush treetop canopies and experience the adrenaline rush of discovering Costa Rica’s forests from new heights. You will also go whitewater tubing down a winding jungle river (weather permitting), which is always a traveler favorite. Being near the stunning Pacific coast allows for a variety of water sports and beach time, as well as impromptu soccer and field games. You might even get lucky enough to witness baby sea turtles hatching! And don’t forget to take in those breathtaking sunsets off the coast while spending an afternoon on the shore of one of the country’s many pristine beaches.

“It was one of the best and most eye-opening experiences of my life. I loved how we weren’t just putting in hours to serve someone we didn’t really know. GLA really helped us to understand the culture and get to know the people so we could really be immersed in the service and would love helping them.  I loved it all – from the adventure days, service days, food, the beach, and learning about the culture and meeting the people. I would definitely recommend this trip and any other GLA trip to any teen looking to find themselves and grow as a person.”
