While diving into the culture and atmosphere of each region compare and contrast public health and medicine and uncover how each is needed to prevent and treat illness.
ON THIS VIRTUAL PROGRAM YOU WILL:
- Travel “virtually” to Africa and the Caribbean, and meet leaders from Ghana and the Dominican Republic
- Uncover the latest public health initiatives being put into place in these communities
- Meet like-minded peers with a shared interest in public health and medicine
- Explore UN Sustainable Development Goal #3 – Good Health and Well-Being
- Dive into UN Sustainable Development Goal #6 – Clean Water and Sanitation
- Earn a certificate of achievement at the end of your two-week experience
During this Global Summer Symposium on Public Health, students will dive into nutrition, sanitation, clean water and essential public health practices being put into effect around the globe.
Compare and contrast public health and medicine and how the local culture affects both. See how these two differ, as you learn distinctly how the former is focused on prevention, the latter on treatment, and how both are critical to the health and wellbeing of communities.
Students on this program will travel “virtually” to two distinct countries on different continents. In Africa, Ghana will be your remote outpost where the stage will be set for a fascinating deep-dive into how public health initiatives are being used to fight disease in rural locations with few hospitals and underfunded clinics. In the Caribbean, you’ll take a closer look at the island of Hispaniola where Dominicans and Haitians share a landmass that face similar issues when it comes to public health. See how the intersection of each culture creates complex challenges where rural populations have limited access to consistent healthcare.
Throughout this two-week online program, take a critical look at public health efforts across two unique countries.
While learning about the unique and wonderful cultures in each region of the world, we will discover how culture can directly and indirectly affect health outcomes in communities.
See how even the greatest and seemingly insurmountable challenges can be addressed and what future solutions may exist.
In the Dominican Republic, students will learn about how nutrition plays a vital role in good health and well-being. In Ghana, discover W.A.S.H techniques and how composting toilets have transformed a local community through a focus on water and sanitation.
During this program, explore United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #3 – Good Health and Well-Being and United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #6 – Clean Water and Sanitation.
