Global Summer Symposium
on Language Immersion
Join us for a two-week online program where you will primarily speak and learn in Spanish to boost your language skills. Travel virtually to Spain and Peru to explore how language is instrumental to culture and society in ways that go beyond learning vocabulary. Student projects will be to create curriculum and resource aids to support local schools and health institutions that support these communities.
ON THIS VIRTUAL PROGRAM YOU WILL:
- Travel “virtually” to Peru and Spain – and see how the Spanish language shapes both countries
- Learn about the distinct variations of Spanish, and how both accent and vocabulary varies (and why)
- Meet like-minded peers with a shared interest in Spanish language immersion
- Explore UN Sustainable Development Goal #10 – Reduced Inequalities
- Dive into UN Sustainable Development Goal #16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
- Earn a certificate of achievement at the end of your two-week experience
During this Global Summer Symposium on Language immersion, students will be immersed in the Spanish language, the second most widely spoken native language in the world.
We will explore this theme historically, as a direct result of both immigration and Spanish colonization to the “New World,” how language – like all aspects of culture – mixed and fused with local indigenous languages, practices and traditions.
Students on this program will travel “virtually” to two countries connected by a shared language, Spain and Peru. These locations will serve as the stage to compare and contrast the evolution of the Spanish language in these locations. Uncover the various dialects in different regions, and look into the challenging concept of how not being able to speak either the primary language or a local dialect can impact and hinder various populations, including local immigrants, native indigenous groups and others.
Throughout this two-week online program, build your own language skills as you learn about the impact of the Spanish language.
In Spain, students will learn about immigration from Africa and eastern Europe and confront the inequalities that face immigrants who do not speak the local language or dialect.
In Peru, students will learn how the indigenous Quechua (descendants of the Inca) do not often speak fluent Spanish and the challenges they face in light of this lack of limited access.
This program will be delivered in a hybrid of spoken Spanish and English, so that students can be immersed in the Spanish language as they come to understand its intricacies and many distinctive cultural influences.
During this program, explore United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #10 – Reduced Inequalities and United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
PLEASE NOTE: Students who register for the Global Summer Symposium on Language Immersion need to have an intermediate level of Spanish speaking skills to participate, as a large portion of this program is facilitated in Spanish. Please contact us if you have any questions at 858-771-0645.
